This Week's Topic: Remain calm!
“Be still and know that I am God.” - Psalm 46:10 A
few days ago, my husband and I tried kayaking for the first time – and
we loved it. Although I’ve talked about doing it for some time, my
unwarranted fears of tipping over into a creek full of mirky, salt
water bridled my enthusiasm. :) After talking to several people who
raved about how much they enjoyed it (and that they’ve never fallen in
the water!), I decided it was time to give it a try. I’d like to share
a simple lesson that emerged from the experience. Before getting
into the water, the kayak rental clerk gave a quick and simple lesson
about how to get in and out of the kayak. This was a key lesson because
people most often fall in the water while trying to get in or out (I
managed not to fall in – barely). I was glad for the lesson on getting
in and out, but frankly I was waiting for the lesson about how not to
tip over! “So how do I keep from falling in?” I asked, a bit
anxiously. It was the third time since entering the store that I'd
mentioned something about tipping over. “First,” he said, “Stop thinking about tipping over! If you keep thinking about it, it’ll probably happen.” “And
second,” he continued, “If waves or a lack of balance cause you to lose
balance, don’t panic and start flailing your arms and moving wildly.
Instead, get centered and remain calm – then you will regain stability.” Interestingly,
I never came close to tipping over. My fear, it turned out, was a
rather irrational one. I stopped thinking about my fear and focused on
enjoying the moment. This week, I feel led to encourage you to
get centered and remain calm in the midst of any storm or chaos that
may be swirling around you. Your “storm” may be small or major, but one
of the keys to surviving it in tact is not making a bad situation
worse. You don’t squelch a fire by adding fuel to it, so my question to
you is this: In what area of your life is it time to get centered and
become more calm? It may be time to “be still and know” that God is in
control. Often, when faced with challenges that leave you feeling
out of control, the first inclination is to react rather than respond.
This message is your reminder that you can choose to respond. How? Take
a deep breath. Pray. Identify the outcome you want. Then take an action
that will best support that outcome. What you focus on expands, so make
a decision to focus on what you want rather than what you don’t want.
When you get centered and respond calmly, you take control of your own
sense of peace and well-being in the midst of situations that feel
beyond your control. Rather than escalating the problem with anxiety or
turmoil, restore order by creating an environment that allows for a
solution. My challenge to you this week: Choose to be calm in the midst of a storm Journaling assignment: What is the storm or chaos you are dealing with right now? How could you “respond” more calmly?
Until next time ... Warm wishes,
