This Week's Topic: What's this teaching you?
Dear Friend, I wonder what you are
experiencing this week that is perplexing or frustrating to you. So
often in life, we focus on the struggle of a challenge and forget to
stop and ask, “Is there something I can learn here?” For example, being
overloaded can teach you that it’s time to make some changes in your
schedule. Continual bickering with a friend or loved one can tell you
that there is something beneath the surface that needs to be addressed.
A loss of motivation at work can tell you that something has shifted
for you emotionally and you need to pay attention. It can be easy
to speed over the bumps in your life without slowing down to
acknowledge them. In a literal sense, bumps in the road are supposed to
slow you down. They signal that if you don’t slow down, you may
endanger yourself or others. This week, I feel led to ask you to
identify the most perplexing or frustrating dilemmas in your life and
ask, “What is this teaching me?” “If any of you lacks wisdom, you
should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and
it will be given to you,” James 1:5 promises. The answers you seek lie
within you. But you’ve got to ask – and expect - that you will receive
what you ask for. The lessons of life need not be complicated. Often,
they are quite simple. Here are a few examples of the simple lessons
your life may be offering you right now: - You’re afraid. Admit it. Then take a step in the right direction despite your fear. - It’s not a good fit (a relationship, a situation, a job). Stop pretending. Make a change. - You’re exhausted. It’s time to make rest a priority. What could you do to free up the time to give you the rest you need? - You need to hone your skills in some area. Do what you need to do. Often,
God will offer the same lesson time and again through different
circumstances, people and events. When we make a habit of noticing what
life is trying to teach us, then learning the lesson, we create a
richer and more fulfilling life – faster. Journaling assignment: What is perplexing in your life right now? What frustrates you? What is this situation teaching you right now? My challenge to you this week: Be teachable. Intentionally seek the lesson in a perplexing or frustrating situation.
Until next time ... Warm wishes,
