This week's topic:
Why You Need More Joy, Less Stress in 2009 and How to Get It
"The joy of the Lord is your strength." - Nehemiah 8:10
Dear Friend,
This week, I want to encourage you to tap into a powerful source of strength that can give you a big advantage and the energy to bring your goals to life this year - even in the face of adversity. "The joy of the Lord is your strength," Nehemiah 8:10 says. Even scientific findings support this scripture. With all of the negative economic news, focusing on the positive may be more important than ever. Research confirms that if you create more happiness in your everyday life, you're more likely to get that new job, spend less, attract friendships and be healthier.
The truth is many people aim for success, believing it will bring happiness, but studies show it works the other way around: Happiness brings greater success. Positive emotion gives you the energy to deal with life's negatives and be resilient in the face of adversity. Without it, it will be much harder to reach your goals and enjoy true life satisfaction. So focus first on living a daily life filled with more joy and less stress, more peace and less strife. How do you do that? Intentionally sprinkle uplifting moments throughout your day. Commit to small changes that reconnect you with the people and things that matter most. Here are a few ideas from positive psychology findings and my book How Did I Get So Busy? The 28-Day Plan to Free Your Time, Reclaim Your Schedule and Reconnect with What Matters Most: 1. Create "fun goals" - things you'll do for fun at least once a week
2. Stop hoarding vacation time. Take out your calendar and schedule time off throughout year
3. Take a daily walk with a loved one
4. Sit down as a family for dinner (only 28% of Americans do)
5. Tame your technology habits by having "no email periods" throughout the day
6. Before going to bed, write down three things you are grateful for (Research shows you'll actually sleep better)
7. Say "no" more, so you can say "yes" to the things that really matter
8. Get in "flow" with challenging, enjoyable activities
9. Stop eating lunch at your desk (75% of Americans do), and eat with a friend while enjoying positive conversation
10. Every day, do something kind for someone. Journaling assignment: In what way(s) will you intentionally sprinkle uplifting moments throughout each day starting this week? My challenge to you this week: Use joy as a strategy for success. Make room for more of it in your everyday life and you'll build the strength to persevere through the inevitable adversities and obstacles that come your way as you move towards your goals.
Until next time ...
