This Week's Topic: What's the best thing that happened to you today?
Dear Friend,
What's the best thing that happened to you today?
This is one of my favorite questions to ask people in lieu of the overused and often insincere, "How are you?" It's a simple, thought-provoking question. Ask it of others -- and once a day, ask it of yourself. In my seminars and workshops, I often have participants ask each other, "What's the best thing that's happened to you today (or this week or this month ...)?" Most people have to think for a moment, but the response is always one that lifts spirits and puts life in a whole new perspective.
It can be easy to get so busy that you forget to notice the good things going on in your life. So maybe your job or your finances aren't where you want them to be, but something great is happening with your family or friends. Celebrate it! Acknowledge it! Gratitude is the first step to ensuring joy permeates your life on a daily basis.
Over the next week, I challenge you to celebrate your life by noticing the milestones, "wins," and good things that are happening in your life. At the end of each day, ask yourself, "What was the best thing that happened to me today?" Jot down your responses. Then at the end of the week, choose the best thing that's happened all week and come up with a fun way to celebrate it.
So often in life, we move too quickly to truly enjoy the good things that come our way. But why not make celebrating your life, especially the good things in your life, a regular habit? If you finally got started on the exercise plan you've been talking about for months, do something fun for yourself to celebrate taking a step towards a healthier lifestyle. If someone else blessed you in some way - and that was the best thing that's happened all week, celebrate by finding a fun way to be a blessing to them. If you finally got around to clearing your clutter, celebrate your newfound space! Find ways to celebrate your progress and life becomes much more fun.
My challenge to you this week: Notice the good things in life and celebrate them! Choose at least one good thing to celebrate over the next week.
Journaling assignment: Look back over the last year. What are the best things that have happened to you? What makes you feel grateful and excited about life? Noticing the things that are good about your life often gives you the fuel to keep pushing forward, even on the days when things don't quite go your way.
