This Week's Topic: Are there enough eggs in your basket?
Dear Friend,
Are there enough eggs in your basket? While speaking at an event in Kansas City this summer, a recent high school graduate who was being honored with a scholarship described her philosophy on why she applied to only one college - a prestigious arts college in New York. "They told me, 'Don't put all your eggs in one basket,'" she said. Then explained, "... but I like this basket!" The audience laughed. I loved the boldness and clarity in her statement. In a culture that often advises you to have a backup plan just in case your dreams don't work out, it is counterintuitive to put all your eggs in one basket. But in planning for the "just in case" scenario, sometimes you spread yourself too thin and don't put enough energy (eggs) in to the one dream (basket) you really want. This week, I encourage you to take a look at where you are focusing your energy. Is it mostly on moving in the direction of your vision? Or are you spread so thin there are few resources or energy left for the goals you really want to manifest? Too many baskets can water down your efforts. It is often fear that keeps you from committing yourself fully to the thing you most want. Whether it is a relationship, a job or a business venture, anything worth having is worth giving your all. In the event that you put all your eggs in one basket - and that basket is lost, trust that you have the ability and faith to use the wisdom gained to rebuild and start again. To be clear, a backup plan can be wise, but it should never be a substitute for exercising your faith and conquering your fears. When the backup plan eclipses the vision, you sabotage your success. My challenge to you this week: Don't spread yourself so thin there are no resources or energy to focus on what matters most! Concentrate your efforts - don't be afraid to put your eggs in one basket! Journaling question: In what way are you spreading yourself too thin? What goal do you need to put more energy or resources into? What will you have to let go of in order to find the additional energy or resources to dedicate to your goal?
Warm wishes,
