Week 2:
Join the Club! 4 Ways to Beat Your Bad Habit
Dear Friend,
Do you have a bad habit you struggle with? You might even beat yourself up for it, as
you've tried repeatedly to eradicate it.
And even if you're better than you used to be, sometimes it still tempts
you? Join the club. If you're human, you have a weakness or two
(or moreJ). You're not the only one.
If you've read How Did
I Get So Busy? or this newsletter for awhile, you know I occasionally joke
about being a recovering procrastinator.
I'm much better than I used to be, but it is still a challenge at
times. I get the sudden urge to check
updates on Facebook when I need to be writing this newsletter. Or I sit down to write a proposal and suddenly
feel compelled to check my email - again.
For years, I felt guilty about it.
"I'm a writer. How terrible that
I'm not writing all the time - and on schedule!"
Then at a speaking engagement several years ago while
talking to an author I admire, who's written more than 20 books and sold
several million copies, I revealed my little procrastination secret. I thought she could give me some advice on
how to become more disciplined and finally kick my procrastination habit for
good. I also thought she'd be shocked by
my admission. I mean surely an
award-winning writer of 20 years couldn't relate to such inconsistent writing
habits.
"I really want to get better at writing consistently and not
procrastinating," I said. "It's like I'm
fighting with myself. It drives me
crazy."
"Tell me about it," she said. "Last summer, I procrastinated so long
working on a book that I ended up having to miss my own family vacation! Everybody else left and I stayed home because
I was already so far behind on my deadline, the publisher finally put their
foot down."
I was stunned. "Do
you always procrastinate?" I asked.
"A lot," she admitted.
"But that was my worst case of it."
I thought I was the only one. Isn't that often the case? We think our problem is so different from
everyone else's. And when you think
that, you give the problem more power than it deserves. You make it unique. You beat yourself up about it. And worst of all, you don't open your eyes to
the solutions and support that exist when you stop hiding your challenge and
begin sharing it.
This week, I challenge you to acknowledge an area you'd like
to strengthen. For example, it could be the habit you
chose last week as a New Year's goal. Then ask yourself these coaching questions:
·
Who do I know that has conquered this habit?
·
What lessons or wisdom can I glean from them?
·
Who do I know that is ready to conquer this
habit?
·
Do they want to be accountability partners as we
reach towards the goal?
·
What specific milestones will we aim for on the
journey towards the goal?
My challenge to you
this week:
Don't beat yourself up for your bad habit. Instead, find common ground with those who
can relate - and make a connection that pulls you in the right direction.
Journaling
assignment:
Answer the five
questions in this week's column. Whose
example inspires you in an area where you feel constantly challenged? What can you learn from that person that will
move you in the direction you desire?
Until next time...
Warm wishes,
