This Week's Topic:
Ready to Take Your
Career to the Next Level? 4 Questions to Ask Yourself
Dear Friend,
Are you working hard, but frustrated at times about where
your career stands? Perhaps you thought
by now you would have gotten that promotion or launched that business, but for
some reason, it hasn't happened yet. Your hard work and knowledge might not be the problem. Sometimes the missing link between success and frustration is
not about tangible efforts, but about intangible skills that build the
relationships that can give you a boost up the corporate ladder. 1.
What's
your career vision? Write down exactly what you are aiming
for. Where are you ultimately trying to
go in your career? What will be the
milestones on your journey there? Each milestone is like a new level in your
career. By identifying them and writing
them down, you can measure your progress along the way. Be specific, but also be flexible. Sometimes
opportunities come along that look different than planned, but will still get
you to your vision. 2.
Are
you equipped to travel to your desired destination? Be clear about the type of experience,
education, contacts and other resources you will need to get to your
vision. Observe those who are already
where you want to be. Be curious. Take
notes. Also be sure to build
relationships with those who can tell you the real deal on what it will take to
get there. 3.
Do
you know the rules of the game at your company? Every organization has its own culture.
There are often unspoken rules, and if you're going to move up, you need to
know what they are. If your company culture, for example, is heavily focused on
teamwork and you tend to do your work in a vacuum, it could work against you -
even if your work is excellent. 4.
What
will I do to strengthen my professional relationships? Relationships
matter. Not just with your boss or
potential mentors, but with your peers and those you manage as well as those
outside your company who are in your industry. Be easy to work with, eliminate the drama and solve problems rather than
magnify them. If you do, you'll get
noticed for the right reasons. Identify one to three people you will
intentionally build or strengthen a work relationship with. Then start today by
reaching out to them - whether to help on a project or just grab lunch.
Journaling Assignment: What is your vision for the future? What milestones do you plan to reach along the way?
My Challenge to You: Identify one person with whom you would like to strengthen your professional relationship. Be intentional about reaching out to them in the next seven days.
Until next time... Warm wishes,
