This Week's Topic: Summer Fun on a Budget
Summer is just around the corner. Will you have some lazy days? Summer
vacation? A block party? Even though
some economists say the recession is over, you might still be feeling the
pinch. So if you want to maximize your fun without busting your budget, ask
yourself these five questions:
1.
What
brings me joy?
Start with this simple question because,
ultimately, joy is what you're after.
Make a list of what brings you joy and start brainstorming ways to
incorporate it into your days this summer.
Maybe it's playing at the park with your kids, evening walks, or the
roller coaster ride at your local amusement park. Whatever it is, plan for it and do at least
one thing on your joy list this week. It's easy to think about what you want to do,
and even easier to still be thinking about it three months from now.
2.
Who
brings me joy?
Whether it is friends and family you see
every day, or someone special you don't get to see often, make a list of who
brings you joy. Then ask, "How can I
connect with them in a meaningful way this summer?"
3.
Where
do the tourists go around here?
Being on a budget doesn't have to mean
giving up being a tourist - just be a tourist a little closer to home. In fact, where do tourists go that is within
a reasonable driving distance from home?
There are probably attractions right in your own city that you've never
seen. Take advantage of them!
4.
Who
can I team up with?
If throwing a party feels like too daunting
of a task, make it fun and affordable by throwing one with one or more other
people. Whether it's a block party, pool
party or barbecue, teaming up and sharing the cost can actually be more fun
than doing it alone.
5.
What
can I do for someone else?
One way to have fun
and make a difference at the same time is to do something for others this
summer. Whether it's volunteering on a
home improvement project, reading to kids in your local library's reading
program, or doing a back-to-school supplies donation drive at the end of the
summer, come up with a way to make a difference. Get the kids in your life involved. Make it a summer to remember. Journaling Assignment: Who do you need to connect with this summer? When will you make that connection?
My Challenge to You: Identify at least one fun activity you will do this summer. Choose a date for this activity, and mark it on your calendar.
Until next time... Warm wishes,
